The Role and Direction of Media Education in the Globalized Age (abridged lecture note by Jin-ro Lee)
** "We are drowning in information but starved for knowledge" by John Naisbitt, Megatrends
** "Media literacy is the ability 'to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate messages in a wide variety forms'"
1) Overarching and sweeping changes in "media ecosphere" (mediacology)
* Traditional media: newspapers, magazines, radio, television * New media & many kinds of media channels: cable TV, satellite TV, Internet, Notebook/Desktop computer, iPad, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, Mobile phone (smartphone), web-TV, Podcast, video games, DVDs, Skype, Zoom, etc. * Using smartphone only, can make movies and upload them to YouTube (Chapt 21, Media literacy education: A requirement for Today's digital citizens, in Action) * Post your thoughts to Twitter or Facebook ( " ) * News of "Arab Spring" spread over the SNS(turned to Twitter for news): Chapt 21. * Using SNS, one person can draw attention from all people on the globe ==> Too much information transmitted over a variety of media, Too many media for individuals to deal with ---> Needs arise for us (adolescents and adults) to critically read(consume) media texts and to produce media texts creatively
2) Genealogy of Media Literacy, Concept, Interpretation
* Terms and concepts: Media Literacy Education ≒ Media Education a. The participatory approach to ME and information literacy are significantly aligned in their progressive intents b. The experience of being a user of information resources and a consumer of media is so similar that the two cannot be separated. c. Regarding the two practices as separate is pedagogically "wasteful".
* Fundamental ideas about media literacy: W. James Potter (2001) - Lifelong learning perspective: a continuum - Multidimensional: cognitive, emotional, aesthetic, moral - Purpose: give us more control over interpretations * Activities required in a knowledgable society with a digital culture: (See p. 65, in Action): 18 items (omitted)
* History of Media Literacy (Four discursive models)(p. 5-6, in Action) (1) Social model: Within a broader set of plural "literacies". Competencies that are involved in making sense of the media are socially distributed: different social groups have different orientations toward media and will use them differently. (2) Protectionist model: Competencies and skills depend on normative judgments and definitions of a media literate person, group, or whole society. Should protect vulnerable(young) media consumers from bad effects of media. (3) Citizenship model: Within Habermasian model of public sphere communication. Affordance for a more participatory society. Active media use as civic action. A new civics. (4) Creative model: Can cultivate creativity while practicing media. But contested fiercely. May imitate mainstream media, may not craft creatively.
* Protectionist vs empowerment camp in M.E. <--- The Seven Great Debates in the Media Literacy Movement in the Journal of Communication (1998, Renee Hobbs)(p. 126, in Action) - Protectionists camp: Advocated for protecting young people from potential bad effects of manipulative messages or informational bias by giving them skills to shield themselves from bias or inherent persuasion. Assumed a mostly passive media recipient. --> Innoculation theory - Empowerment camp: "Media Education is a means to arm youth with skills in critical analysis, and to empower them to create social change through media as tools for expression and action. Assumed a mostly active audience/user. --> Participation theory
