This study examined how viewers’ engagement with divorce-themed reality programs influences couple relationship satisfaction, and analyzed the mediating effect of self-disclosure and the moderating effect of family communication patterns. Based on theories related to para-social interaction, this study classified viewing engagement into three dimensions: behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and referential reflection, and constructed an analytical framework of “viewing engagement–self-disclosure–relationship satisfaction.” The participants were Chinese viewers of marriage and dating reality programs who were either married or in long-term romantic relationships, and a total of 347 valid samples were collected. The collected data were analyzed using structural equation modeling and regression analysis to test the research hypotheses. The results showed that behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and referential reflection all had significant positive effects on self-disclosure. In addition, self-disclosure had a significant positive effect on couple relationship satisfaction and mediated the relationship between viewing engagement and relationship satisfaction. In the moderation analysis, conversation orientation strengthened the positive relationship between self-disclosure and relationship satisfaction, whereas the moderating effect of conformity orientation was not statistically significant. The findings suggest that the viewing experience of divorce-themed reality programs goes beyond simple media consumption and may influence intimate relationships by stimulating individuals’ willingness to express themselves within romantic partnerships.
